COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The community and fellow first responders honored Mike Campbell, a dedicated first responder who passed away Monday — local members gathered to remember his service.  WSAZ
  • Marshall Police and the City of Huntington hosted a distracted driver simulator test for Marshall University students as part of the 'Heads Up, Herd' campaign plus the demo showed the risks of distracted driving and stressed the shared duty of keeping drivers and pedestrians safe.  WSAZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Spring Hill Cemetery, the Healing Field memorial—arranged in precise rows—honors the victims of 9/11 each September; it is featured in this week’s We the People report.  WSAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marshall University is hosting 9/11 Days of Service today through Saturday to honor the 9/11 attack victims and Dr. Paul W. Ambrose with projects that will aid veterans and first responders—students and staff will participate in a memorial stair challenge at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, campus cleanup, breakfast, and a vehicle wash event.  MetroNews

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Huntington launched Project Lights On after volunteers reported over 40 broken streetlights in Highlawn and AEP crews repaired lights Monday and Tuesday—officials plan to expand the project to other parts of the city to improve safety.  WSAZ
  • Governor Morrisey announced West Virginia's first comprehensive energy policy in Wheeling on Wednesday, unveiling a plan covering 25 years that will upgrade current power plants and add new coal facilities to help the state reach 50 gw by 2050. He said the plan, which uses input from lawmakers, industry, and consumers, builds on baseload generation (coal, natural gas, nuclear) to ensure a reliable and secure power supply.  MetroNews
  • Yesterday, lawmakers reviewed outside advice to lower PEIA costs and have not yet chosen a plan. They looked at ideas such as an income tiering plan—expected to save up to $20 million—and changes in non-state employee contributions to help control rising drug costs.  MetroNews
  • The West Virginia Department of Human Services released a report from its statewide child welfare listening tour held in eight communities back in May—officials described the need for consistent practices, better communication, and expanded mental health services for caregivers and families, and said a stakeholder advisory committee will be set up to guide future changes.  MetroNews

  • The week 3 power rankings show Huntington high moved to first in Class AAAA after a 22-20 win over Martinsburg, while Wahama held top spot in Class A and Morgantown climbed to third with a 38-7 win—votes from radio broadcasters and sports writers set the list.  MetroNews
  • Marshall coach Tony Gibson said his team lost a close 21-20 game last Saturday and must improve to avoid an 0-3 start. Marshall will host Eastern Kentucky at 6 p.m. Saturday in Huntington—Gibson vows to focus on stopping EKU’s run game and containing quarterback Myles Burkett.  MetroNews
  • A wild Saturday of college football saw Marshall lose to Missouri State and Ohio beat WVU in front of a record crowd—Ohio State earned a win over Grambling State while Kentucky fell to Ole Miss.  WSAZ
