  • On October 1st, Appalachian Power, Wheeling Power and FirstEnergy filed their integrated resource plans outlining how they will meet ratepayers' needs while continuing to rely on coal-fired power amid rising electricity prices — the 828-page filings detail economic scenarios that support coal as the preferred energy source. This move reflects the companies' commitment to using coal for the existing lifespan of West Virginia's coal plants.  Charleston Gazette-Mail

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marshall University's Heart of Appalachia Talent Search program received federal funding in September to support first-generation and low-income students — a move that strengthens its offerings — while West Virginia University's Upward Bound program and Concord University's McNair program received cancellation notices.  Charleston Gazette-Mail

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health officials announced that free healthcare screenings will be offered at an upcoming community event to help residents check their health. Residents can attend later for important health evaluations.  WSAZ

  • Marshall defeated Old Dominion on Saturday with a final score of 48-24. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson scored four touchdowns while the defense made two interceptions—amassing five takeaways that improved Marshall to a 3-3 overall record and 1-1 in Sun Belt play.  WSAZ
