COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Huntington’s a cappella group Thundertones will host a benefit concert on October 11th at 7 p.m. at New Baptist Church on 28th Street to raise funds for Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter — the event supports local animal rescue efforts.  WSAZ
  • Today, Branches Domestic Violence Shelter held its advocacy summit (at Marshall Health Network Arena at 8:30 a.m.) to discuss building a trauma responsive community. The event is the start of a year-long effort with planned activities throughout October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  WSAZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Charles Meyers, a Huntington author, released a new book of poetry—he calls it a reflection on his growth.  WSAZ
  • Mountain Movers Theatre Company is staging BeetleJuice Jr.—a play based on a classic Halloween movie—with cast members Brookelyn Music and Lynlee Short sharing details on First Look at Four. The production was announced yesterday and will run soon for local audiences.  WSAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marshall University reported on Oct. 9 that it is in its third consecutive year of growth — officials say this trend will drive further campus improvements in programs and facilities.  WSAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Huntington unveiled a new welcome sign for the Fairfield neighborhood today. The sign was installed on the right-hand side of 16th Street—reflecting Mayor Patrick Farrell's commitment since his February listening session.  WSAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Thursday, the PICU Transport Team at Hoops Family Children's Hospital celebrated 35 years of service—honoring founding, current, and past members during a ceremony at Cabell Huntington Hospital. The team, which transports patients from hospitals in the region to start critical treatment for children, has been essential in providing quick care.  WCHS-TV
  • The West Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Emergency Medical Services said that record-high pass rates have been reached with EMTs at about 86% and paramedics at 96% on their first try—new training methods and CARES Act-funded ambulance simulators have boosted these scores—making state EMS protocols the 12th best in the nation.  MetroNews

  • Marshall coach Tony Gibson warned his team of the challenge they face on Saturday at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington when Old Dominion—fresh off four wins and led by quarterback Colton Joseph—visits after five winless home games, with the contest starting at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN.  MetroNews
