COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, UPMC and GoHealth Urgent Care celebrated the rebranding of a MedExpress location in Putnam County as part of their joint venture to acquire and update urgent care centers in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Saturday, the West Virginia Food Truck Festival will kick off at noon at Eleanor Park + Fairgrounds, offering free entry, food trucks statewide and live music.  Charleston Gazette-Mail

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Officials announced plans for a new middle school in Huntington on October 8 to serve local students. Project planning will start soon—more details on funding and construction will be provided later.  WSAZ
  • Marshall University President Brad Smith told the Board of Governors that enrollment increased over 20% in the past three years and that fall enrollment is set to rise by 8%—a reversal of a long decline achieved with new strategies like expanded metro tuition zones and on-demand options. He added that official figures will be finalized on October 15 as the university prepares additional academic hires and reallocates state funding.  MetroNews
  • Students returned to class yesterday after bats were found in a school building—officials checked the area—and confirmed it was safe for learning.  WSAZ

  • City leaders unveiled a new welcome sign for the Fairfield neighborhood along 16th Street near Fifth Third Bank on Wednesday—residents had pushed for the project during a Mayor Farrell listening session—giving the community a clearer identity.  WCHS-TV
  • Ronnie Finley joined Milton city council after he was approved by a 4-2 vote on Tuesday to fill the vacant seat left by Troy Nicely (who resigned in July) and was sworn in by Mayor Shane Evans on Wednesday morning.  WCHS-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Freedom Day USA provided free dental care for veterans and active duty members yesterday—local organizers said the event offered check-ups and treatments at community clinics. The program aimed to honor service and improve health for those who served.  WSAZ

  • Marshall used its bye week to fine-tune defense and reduce penalties as it prepares to face ODU on Saturday at Joan C. Edwards Stadium — head coach Tony Gibson said the team will tighten coverage and run tackling to counter ODU’s strong offense and its versatile quarterback.  MetroNews
