  • A brand-new takeout style restaurant will soon open near Marshall University’s campus—aiming to offer quick meal options that meet growing local demand.  WSAZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The city plans to redevelop an empty site at 24th Street near the Joan C. Edwards stadium as Kroger shows interest in building a 99,000 square-foot grocery store and fueling station. Mayor Patrick Farrell said the proposal will go before the Board of Zoning Appeals on October 21 and the city hopes to secure a deal by the end of the year.  WSAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Carol Miller chose not to take her congressional salary during a federal shutdown that had reached its sixth day and stayed home in Huntington—she said a clean funding bill is needed to help manage the nation’s $37 trillion debt.  MetroNews
  • City officials approved plans to redevelop a local site during their meeting last night and will announce project details soon.  WSAZ
  • At the start of Saturday’s West Virginia Pumpkin Festival, heavy traffic slowed drivers as Milton police only had three officers and one from Cabell County to manage extra intersections due to construction—making the city pay overtime instead of using a contract. Milton is working to hire more officers and police chief Kyle O’Dell said help from the national guard could be used if needed.  WSAZ
  • Lawyers for the state Board of Education filed a state Supreme Court challenge, arguing that House Bill 2755 gives the Legislature control over education rulemaking—control the board has traditionally held before and now wants the court to restore by ordering the Secretary of State to publish its rules.  MetroNews
  • CSX will close the Vintroux Road crossing in St. Albans at 8:30 a.m. today for tie replacement and repaving—an alternate route on Tomkins Crossing Road is available for residents but remains rough, and it will reopen at 6 p.m. Wednesday.  WSAZ
  • Commissioner Cindy Beane said West Virginia’s Medicaid program will change under the Big, Beautiful Bill Act with new community engagement requirements—80 hours per month of work, education or service—for able-bodied adults without dependents while officials prepare tech upgrades that may lead some enrollees to lose coverage.  MetroNews

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health advocates warn that enhanced premium tax credits may end by the end of the year, putting 70,000 residents at risk of losing coverage and facing over a 150% increase in premiums—hitting rural hospitals and small businesses hard. State leaders have yet to act, and more measures are needed to avoid growing healthcare costs.  WCHS-TV

  • John Marshall and Fairmont Senior qualified for next week’s WVSSAC State Golf Tournament at Green Hills Country Club after finishing first and second Monday in the Class AAA Region I tourney.
