CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Funktafest 9 returns this weekend in Huntington as Funkle Sam and Eye Guy previewed the event on First Look at Four — the festival will feature local music and creative fun for the community. WSAZ

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ More than a dozen Marshall alumni and university officials met at the Ruffner House in Charleston on Thursday evening to launch the Kanawha Valley Alumni Chapter — they enjoyed food, drinks and silent auctions. Chapter President Melanie Pagliaro said the group plans to support the university’s food pantry this fall and will meet monthly on the third Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. — they are now working on securing a permanent meeting place. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Drought Monitor reported that heavy rain improved streamflow and soil moisture in parts of West Virginia, but 15 counties remain in extreme drought including Marshall and Webster — other areas from the Eastern Panhandle to the Kanawha Valley still face severe conditions. MetroNews
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced state funds will pay $7,000 a day to keep visitor services running at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and New River Gorge—services that were halted during the federal shutdown and will resume pending final approval from the National Park Service. The 14-day agreement may be reevaluated as fall tourism picks up. MetroNews
