EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine received accreditation for a four-year anesthesiology residency program that will begin with four residents in July next year. Sixteen physicians will rotate at Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center plus the VA Medical Center to train in clinical areas such as airway management and pain control. WCHS-TV
- ➤ West Virginia schools showed modest progress on testing with 86% of districts improving in language arts and 83% advancing in math, while chronic absenteeism dropped to 22.8% statewide plus state superintendent Michele Blatt said efforts to boost attendance are paying off. MetroNews
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The National Weather Service said our region has been in drought since Aug. 1 with areas from Huntington to Kanawha rated from moderate to extreme as dry conditions continue to affect agriculture and water levels. Rain will come next week but will only slowly ease the drought (farmers have to pay extra for hay and water). WSAZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A major water leak has closed rest areas on both eastbound and westbound I-64 near Hurricane, and crews are making repairs as the areas will remain closed until further notice. WSAZ
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Fighters in Huntington are preparing to step into the ring for the Mountain State Brawl this week—Janessa Mobley and Macho Bob spoke at First Look at Four. The event will feature competitive matches and draw local excitement. WSAZ
- ➤ Wren Baker clarified that the rules for a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty were misinterpreted during last Saturday’s Backyard Brawl against Pitt—this error cost West Virginia an opportunity to score before the half ended, and the Mountaineers later won in overtime 31-24. The team’s officials confirmed the penalty was never properly assessed, prompting the review. MetroNews
