COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The United Way of Central West Virginia celebrated its 20th Day of Caring yesterday with over 1,000 volunteers joining service projects at community sites such as Capitol Market, the Salvation Army and United Way offices — the event honored longtime support from companies like Komax Business Systems and returning volunteers.  MetroNews
  • Path to the Cure returns to Huntington this weekend and will offer family fun events that benefit local cancer patients—organizers say the event brings much-needed support to the community.  WSAZ
  • Covenant House will host its 15th annual Chef’s Challenge fundraiser next week to raise funds for its programs.  WSAZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nucor announced today that 350 workers have been hired at its Apple Grove plant in Mason County and said it will open its first entry-level hiring pool in a few months—while the nearly 60% complete facility is set to start production at the end of next year with operations beginning in late 2026. The steel plant is expected to offer jobs with an average annual salary of $85,000.  MetroNews

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Education officials reported that Barboursville Middle School was placed on lockdown on Wednesday after two small caliber bullets—consistent with hunting rifle ammunition—were found in a student restroom, and officers later determined the bullets had fallen from a student's backpack following a hunting trip with no firearm or threat identified.  WCHS-TV
  • On Sept. 16, Marshall University President Brad Smith and his wife Alys donated $50 million to the Marshall For All program. The program helps students earn their bachelor’s degrees without student loans by combining scholarships, grants, work jobs and family contributions.  Charleston Gazette-Mail

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Huntington city leaders will expand Project Lights On to repair non-working streetlights after residents reported over 40 outages in Highlawn and officials fixed 25 already—I confirm AEP will send repair reports in batches to neighborhoods such as Guyandotte, Fairfield, and Westmoreland—to address safety concerns.  WSAZ
  • Huntington City Council is working toward new rules for council members’ residency requirements—efforts that may change the eligibility criteria for serving and will be detailed in upcoming meetings.  WSAZ
  • Huntington City Council is planning new rules that require each member to take an oath confirming their residency. The proposal came after concerns were raised about a council member’s residency and aims to ensure fairness.  WSAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu shots are becoming available in Huntington as flu season — which mainly peaks between December and February — approaches. Marshall University School of Pharmacy will host two immunization clinics on Sept. 29 in the Shawkey Dining Room at Memorial Student Center and on Oct. 3 in the lobby of Stephen J. Kopp Hall.  WSAZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marshall won 38-7 over Eastern Kentucky last Saturday and will face Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. Saturday at Johnny Red Floyd Stadium—coach Tony Gibson said the team expects to build on its strong performance.  MetroNews
