COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cooper Family Farms celebrated its 25th anniversary last Saturday with a season opener featuring a corn maze that attracted many visitors in Milton. The farm will operate throughout October on Fridays and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.—and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., charging $10 for adults while children under three enter free.  WSAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Crews are finalizing the transformation of the former Sears space at the Huntington Mall into the Woody Williams Center for Advanced Learning and Careers, which will open in January. The center will offer courses in auto mechanics, welding, HVAC, electrical, graphic design, law, public safety, and aerospace engineering — a change designed to boost local career options.  WSAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eligible recipients of the 2024–2025 Low Income Energy Assistance Program will receive a one-time supplemental payment ranging from $25 to $53 based on their prior heating assistance; payments will be sent directly to the primary provider on record or mailed for bulk fuel purchases—eligible recipients should receive their payment by the end of September.  WSAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Yesterday, the annual Hoops Family Children’s Classic golf tournament at Guyan Golf and Country Club raised nearly $200,000 to benefit pediatric patients at Hoops Family Children’s Hospital—supporting local healthcare efforts.  WSAZ
  • Huntington held its Fitfest at Ritter Park Saturday to honor Dr. Paul Ambrose, a Marshall University graduate who dedicated his life to improving health and fighting obesity (the event raised funds to expand the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health Path and featured kid-friendly fun runs, a bike rodeo, and activities at the Huntington Children's Museum).  WSAZ
  • Vandalia Health and West Virginia American Water are offering free mammograms via mobile vans to bring screening services directly to local women—aiming to improve early detection.  WSAZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • George Washington scored the final 13 points to secure a 27-12 win against Cabell Midland, and the Patriots improved to 3-0 after playing three days behind schedule due to a power outage in Ona—both teams will prepare for Week 4 matchups soon.  MetroNews
  • Marshall University is checking technical issues with the scoreboards at Joan C. Edwards Stadium (the Joan) and Hoops Family Field (the Vet) after glitches disrupted game play. Officials said they will assess the problems and plan repairs to keep games fair.  WSAZ
