ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A pedestrian was struck and killed—just after 11:45 a.m.—by a train on Rock Lane Drive at the Kanawha Turnpike on Sep. 9. WSAZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kethan Neginhal from Huntington High School was nationally recognized for leadership and patriotism after attending the American Legion Boy’s Nation Conference this past summer. He was one of 220 students chosen and received a plaque, two patches, and a folded flag during a Tuesday ceremony—an honor that underscores his civic commitment. WCHS-TV
- ➤ West Virginia schools face mixed immunization rules after Governor Morrisey’s order said that the religious law lets parents opt out while judges in some counties ruled differently. The state Supreme Court will hear the case in mid-February—by then the Legislature may also change the law in January. MetroNews
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Corrections commissioner David Kelly—named by Gov. Patrick Morrisey in June—told lawmakers that the state still faces over 410 jail staffing vacancies as of July and is focusing on improving facility cleanliness and maintenance. He said job fairs and recruiting efforts are underway to fill the gaps and that raising pay for non-uniform staff is being considered. MetroNews
- ➤ State Treasurer Larry Pack announced a revised Hope Scholarship projection for the next school year that will save over $70 million compared to January's estimate—now projected at $244,580,215 with awards of $5,435.62, and further review is expected in December with the Department of Education. - ➤ Disaster relief groups testified on Tuesday before the Joint Legislative Committee on Flooding and warned that potential cuts to FEMA funding could overburden nonprofits that help West Virginia recover from frequent floods. They noted that capacity for disaster case management declined from as many as forty to fifty workers after the 2016 flood to only four or five workers now — a drop that could slow recovery efforts statewide.
