  • A man died in a house fire that broke out Friday evening in the 2900 block of Waverly Road when live power lines fell onto a metal fence—firefighters had difficulty getting close—and authorities are still investigating the cause.  MetroNews

  • Marshall's Thundering Herd lost their season opener 45-7 to No. 5 Georgia on August 30 in Athens. Head coach Tony Gibson said his team struggled on offense and will work to improve in the next game—Marshall managed only one touchdown during the contest.  MetroNews
  • The West Virginia Mountaineers beat Robert Morris 45-3 in the season opener by gaining 625 yards in total offense and running 393 yards. WVU quarterback Nicco Marchiol threw for 224 yards and one touchdown and will face Ohio next weekend.  WSAZ
