  • Kermit residents mourn fire chief Wilburn Hawkey Preece Jr, who died on Aug 25 after battling health issues. His firefighting uniform is on display outside the station — viewings were held on Aug 27 and one is held today at the old Kermit Gym next to the firehouse.  WSAZ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash closed part of U.S. 35 in Mason County yesterday when a call came in at 6:15 a.m., shutting all lanes (two miles from Point Pleasant) while two people were injured and traffic was diverted.  WSAZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • At the West Virginia Chamber Business Summit yesterday, Charleston Mayor Goodwin, Huntington Mayor Farrell, and Parkersburg Mayor Joyce discussed how major events and planned infrastructure investments can help retain residents. Farrell explained that Huntington will soon break ground on projects like a $250 million wastewater treatment plant—an effort that calls for stronger partnerships between business, county, and state leaders.  MetroNews

  • Dr. Ashley Stephens from Cabell County Schools shared practical tips yesterday to help parents encourage children to join after-school activities.  WSAZ
  • Spring Valley High School students are learning aviation in a program — started three years ago with partners Marshall University and Mount West — that has 14 students enrolled this year.  WSAZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marshall will play No. 5 Georgia on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the 93,000-seat Sanford Stadium. Coach Tony Gibson said the Herd must stay focused on their game plan and not let the large crowd distract them—he added that the challenge will help the team learn and improve.  MetroNews
