ACCIDENTS NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • Todd M. Chapman, 57, pleaded guilty to bank fraud after he embezzled at least $602,000 from a local law firm where he worked as an office manager for about 30 years by misusing client trust accounts and a PPP loan—he faces sentencing on December 1 with a potential maximum of 30 years in prison, five years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.  MetroNews
  • Troopers reported that a suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting on August 18 — officials confirmed the fatal incident.  WSAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General J.B. McCuskey filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia against Express Scripts—now Evernorth Health—accusing the company of pushing profits over public safety by relaxing controls on opioid prescriptions and ignoring abuse data. The state claims their actions increased opioid sales and worsened the crisis, and it seeks monetary penalties for the harm done.  MetroNews
  • Cabell County 911 has begun using new drones to help first responders get a higher view in emergencies—like finding missing persons and checking on fires and floods. The drones have spotlights, speakers and infrared sensors that will speed up responses at large events.  WSAZ
  • ACLU-WV and Mountain State Justice revived a lawsuit that challenges Gov. Patrick Morrisey’s order allowing religious vaccine exemptions as the new school year began (the case was dismissed earlier on technical grounds). They filed an emergency request for a temporary restraining order with Kanawha Circuit Judge Jennifer Bailey (the groups say the order oversteps state law and endangers schoolchildren).  MetroNews
