COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Central West Virginia launched a new service to connect local nonprofits with community members who want to volunteer — the service helps boards boost diversity and skills for better leadership.  Charleston Gazette-Mail

CULTURE NEWS

  • The West Virginia Cupcake Festival celebrated 11 years on August 13 — raising funds for Children’s Charities in Huntington.  WSAZ
  • Huntington will host an ArtWalk on Friday to celebrate art and animals—organizers include Courtney Chapman, Sydney Devaney, and Courtney Proctor Cross from First Look at Four.  WSAZ
  • The Hilltop Book Fair will be held this weekend at the Huntington Museum of Art—featuring a wide range of used books that benefit the museum—and is expected to draw local book lovers.  WSAZ
  • The Memorial Arch, located at the corner of Memorial Boulevard and 11th avenue, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 to honor local servicemen from World War I and later conflicts. Ceremonies are held on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and 91 oak trees (planted to honor Cabell County veterans) stand behind the arch (founded in 1924 by the Cabell County War Veterans Commission and the American Legion).  WSAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Explorer Academy delayed its first day of school after mold was found in the building and will offer alternate instruction starting Friday, August 15. Kindergarten students will have orientation today in the cafeteria at the Central Office as officials follow expert guidance to ensure safety.  WSAZ
  • Meadows Elementary now stands in a new building on Wildcat Way — across from Huntington High School — and replaces its old school on Washington Boulevard as students start classes today.  WSAZ
