Good morning, Huntington. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 3rd of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Central City in Huntington hosted its weekly farmer’s market on Saturday, offering local fruits, vegetables, pastries, tomatoes, cookies, and homemade honey. The market began last Saturday in June and will continue on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays until the last Saturday in October — board member Seth Jarrell said the event supports local farmers.  WOWK-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Geek Fest brought comic and movie characters downtown at Inner Geek and Pullman Square where nearly 50 vendors sold art, comics and toys. The event will continue today with more art, festivities and music+ extending Geek Fest into further hours.  WOWK-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Huntington are frustrated that flood mitigation work has not moved forward — local officials plan to review proposals to strengthen flood defenses — as worries about future floods persist.  Charleston Gazette-Mail

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study by ValuePenguin found West Virginia has the second highest loneliness rate in the United States, with 16.1% of residents (usually or always feeling lonely) and 43.2% (who go more than a week without socializing with friends or family) ranking 12th overall. The study also showed that rural states like Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Utah and Alaska have high rates of social isolation.  WOWK-TV
  • Wildfire smoke can drift into Huntington and weaken air quality, so residents should check the Air Quality Index and follow advice to protect their lungs and hearts. Local experts recommend staying indoors, closing windows, and using tools like an N95 mask (which filters most particles) when air quality worsens (especially for those with respiratory issues).  WOWK-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • New head coach Tony Gibson started Marshall’s preseason camp Saturday with a mostly new team that will practice until school begins in a few weeks. He said the team will hold live scrimmages and battle for roster spots before trimming to 105 players for the season opener on August 30 at Georgia — they hope to prove they belong on a big stage.  MetroNews
