  • Family and friends in Boone County honored Baylea Bower, a 24 year old business owner from Bloomingrose who died in a car accident on Easter Sunday, at a celebration held on Saturday—she co-founded The Boone, a boutique coffee shop with partner Katlyn Hawkins. Some proceeds from the event will support keeping the shop open after her loss.  WOWK-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new brunch restaurant is set to open tomorrow on 20th Street in Huntington—Vera Cafe will run from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day except Tuesday—and is owned by Barboursville native Manaf Elhamdani.  WSAZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Liam Lyons was attacked near Memorial Boulevard West and suffered a broken jaw, broken nose, and fractured eye socket while staying with a friend & police arrested James Clapper, 21, and Brock Mazdra, 18 in Flatwoods, Kentucky & the investigation continues after the video of the assault circulated online.  WSAZ
  • State Police arrested 27 year old Brandon McGoyle on Monday after he made bomb threats and armed himself in a standoff with staff at William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital in Weston—he is now charged with terroristic threats and false bomb reports and is held on a $1,000,000 cash bond.  MetroNews

  • Alchemy Theatre celebrated Shakespeare—Richard Perloff and Mike Murdock introduced their new production Love’s Labour’s Lost at First Look at Four in Huntington.  WSAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Public Service Commission ordered an audit of Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power at its July 17 session after complaints about outages— the companies must solicit bids by Aug. 15 with an auditor to be chosen by Sept. 1 and the study filed by Dec. 31— and the companies will cover the audit costs.  WOWK-TV
  • The West Virginia Department of Human Services will start accepting applications for the Emergency Low Income Energy Assistance Program on Monday, July 28 and will take them until Friday, Aug. 8 or until funds run out. The program helps low-income families facing energy emergencies and may also assist with cooling costs in some cases.  WSAZ
