  • Thousands of Appalachian Power customers lost power in Cabell County when outages began just after 4:30 p.m.—2,831 outages were reported near Ona and Melissa—and the company said power would be restored by 11 p.m., with 2,921 customers affected statewide.  WOWK-TV

  • Huntington Mall is offering a back-to-school deal that will let shoppers buy clothing $125 or less, instructional materials $20 or less, school supplies $50 or less, personal computers, laptops and tablets up to $500, and select sports equipment up to $150 without paying sales tax from Aug. 1 to 4. Shoppers spending at least $250 from July 21 through Aug. 17 can get a free $25 mall gift card at the Customer Service Center — while supplies last — adding an extra perk for early buyers.  WOWK-TV

  • Local authorities began searching for a man with dementia who went missing yesterday and are urging anyone with information to contact law enforcement immediately.  WSAZ

  • A new local movement honored freedom seekers by retracing historic Underground Railroad trails in our region—featured in WSAZ's 'We The People' segment that revisited the fight against slavery before and during the Civil War.  WSAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rising 6th and 9th graders in Cabell County Schools will soon get a sneak peek at their new schools during CLIMB Camp—students will tour the campuses before the school year starts. Dr. Ashley Stephens explained that the camp offers early exposure to help ease the transition back to school.  WSAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Appalachian Power issued a countywide power outage in Cabell County on July 16 at 5:30 p.m. that affected about 2,838 households along Route 60 and Fudges Creek Road; the utility estimated power would be restored by midnight (crews are actively working to resolve the issue).  WSAZ
  • Cabell County launched its new Family Treatment Court on Monday to help parents with substance use disorder reunite with their children — Judge Sean Hammers oversees the program while Clarissa Mill-Pyles coordinates referrals, with a nine-month plan that includes intensive monitoring and treatment.  MetroNews
