CRIME NEWS

  • Timothy Lane Crowder, a Huntington man, pleaded guilty Monday to taking about $24,500 from veterans' disability benefits by helping 13 veterans with their claims between September 2020 and July 2023—he will be sentenced on Oct. 27 and could face up to 5 years in prison, 3 years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and repayment of $24,525, prosecutors said.  WCHS-TV
  • A former mayor and city recorder pleaded not guilty on July 15th during a court hearing—further proceedings are scheduled as the investigation continues.  WSAZ

  • The Downtown Huntington Art Walk returns this weekend—supporting Facing Hunger Foodbank as organizers Sydney Devaney and Courtney Chapman met with Cyndi Kirkhart from Facing Hunger at First Look at Four.  WSAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On this day in 1988 the final section of I-64 was finished linking Sam Black Church with the West Virginia Turnpike — I-77. The project began in 1957 with its first section from Huntington to Ona completed in 1960 and the route reaching Charleston in 1975.  WSAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Last weekend at the Rock the Country festival, Boyd County officials treated 538 patients in the medical tent and opened a second tent with an extra 200 cots to meet the surge caused by extreme heat. Officials plan to meet with the Healing Appalachia festival organizers in September to improve safety measures for the 30,000 expected attendees.  WSAZ
