ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out just before 9 a.m. Tuesday at the old McArthur Hotel, and officials are investigating its cause (no details on what started the blaze have been released).  WSAZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Appalachian Power warned customers that scammers are using high-pressure tactics during extreme heat to threaten disconnection and extract immediate payments and personal information — residents are advised to hang up and call the official company number rather than respond to unknown calls or door-to-door visits.  MetroNews

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Circus Dance Camp — a community event — will be held July 14th–16th at Huntington Dance Theatre — more details are expected soon —.  WSAZ
  • H.A.R.T. in the Park’s pre-show 'Dare to Dream' starts this Friday — part of a local series that includes a 35th Anniversary video for the ADA, the Boyd County Craft and Boutique Show on July 12, and free snack wraps for the first 100 customers at McDonald’s tomorrow. Additional events feature the Circus Dance Camp from July 14—16 at Huntington Dance Theatre and Hurricon at Valley Park on September 6—7.  WSAZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The West Virginia Division of Highways reported a pothole event slowed traffic on the left lanes of I-64 West at Fort Hill Bridge just past the Oakwood Road exit last Wednesday night—road crews are now working on repairs.  WSAZ
  • Work on fixing the dip on Interstate 64 in Nitro began last night as the West Virginia Department of Transportation closed the fast lane on Interstate 64 Westbound from mile marker 45.0 to 43.5 from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. to perform saw cutting in preparation for repairs on the Nitro eastbound approach scheduled to start July 13—drivers had complained about vehicles scraping the bridge.  WOWK-TV
  • Officials announced plans to repair dips on I-64 to keep roads safe for drivers in Huntington. Crews will begin assessing the work soon and set a schedule for the repairs.  WSAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • New CDC data shows West Virginia recorded a nearly 41% drop in overdose deaths from last year—this is the largest decrease in the nation with declines of 69% in opioid deaths, over 71% in fentanyl deaths, and 64% in meth-related cases. Governor Patrick Morrisey said a multi-agency plan and funds from the West Virginia First Foundation helped improve prevention, treatment, and law enforcement initiatives statewide.  WOWK-TV
