CRIME NEWS

  • Huntington police charged a man with attempted murder yesterday—authorities are investigating the case and seeking more evidence.  WSAZ
  • State Fire Marshal staff uncovered two incidents of illegal storage and sale of consumer-grade fireworks in the past six weeks—one at a warehouse in Barboursville on May 22 and another at a Chapmanville roadside display on June 28, with both offenders cited and products seized.  WSAZ
  • Samantha Thomas, 28, pleaded guilty Tuesday to child neglect that led to a 10-month-old’s death from heroin intoxication in 2019 — her sentencing is set for August 18.  WCHS-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The school discipline bill signed into law went into effect on July 2nd and will be implemented when classes resume for the 2025-2026 school year—teachers now have the authority to exclude disruptive students to review their conduct with principals and behavioral experts. The new policy standardizes how student behavior is managed across schools to address ongoing concerns raised in teacher surveys.  MetroNews
  • State Treasurer Larry Pack announced a large increase in Hope Scholarship awards for the 2025 to 2026 academic year, with nearly 15,000 students set to receive full funding instead of the 10,750 who were funded last year. The scholarship is now available to all students in kindergarten through 12th grade and can be used for tuition — homeschool curriculum and other school expenses.  WOWK-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After flash flooding on July 7, Huntington officials released details of a flood mitigation plan—the largest since the 60s—to fix long-standing drainage issues. The plan includes debris removal along Fourpole Creek, retention pond restoration, and installing a forced main line at key intersections to direct water safely to the Ohio River.  WSAZ
  • Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power asked the PSC for a $250.5 million rate increase that would add about $23.74 to a typical monthly bill for 1,000 kilowatt-hours of use. The companies' filing shows that relying on coal may bring risks + PSC Chairman Charlotte Lane recently praised coal in a published column.  Charleston Gazette-Mail
