  • Monty Fulton, a retired miner, now volunteers at Facing Hunger Foodbank—where three friends say his dedication has made a strong local impact, helping those in need.  WSAZ
  • The regatta continues through the holiday weekend in Huntington with boat races and family activities planned for local residents. Organizers say the event will run through Saturday and Sunday as officials keep an eye on weather conditions for safety.  WSAZ

  • Karubees Jamaican Restaurant will open next month at The Market Downtown and serve traditional Jamaican dishes from Chef Kerry Martin and his wife Bina. The restaurant will offer outdoor seating, dine-in, carryout, and delivery via DoorDash and GrubHub — using family recipes passed down from Martin's grandmother.  WSAZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Carter G. Woodson Memorial Foundation is restoring the home at 10th Avenue and 17th Street in Huntington so it can become a museum for learning about Memphis Tennessee Garrison—a civil rights leader who helped shape our community. The exterior work is complete with help from the National Park Service, and the foundation will soon finish the interior with donated 1900s period pieces—a project that honors her legacy.  WSAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brian Chandler shared food safety tips for summer cookouts in Putnam County by advising that grills be cleaned and raw meats kept separate from cooked ones—he stressed that keeping hot foods hot and cold foods cold prevents food-borne illness. The USDA recommends using a food thermometer and cooking foods to safe temperatures because perishable items left out over 2 hours enter a bacteria danger zone.  WSAZ
