ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A vehicle flipped on I-64 near Huntington early Sunday morning when it reportedly crossed the center line at mile marker 15 around 3:23 a.m.—two people were transported to a hospital and their conditions remain unknown. WOWK-TV
- ➤ Fire crews responded to a house fire near Fifth Ave and Buffington Street at around 8 p.m. Sunday—no one was home—and used aggressive tactics to put out the flames while investigators began working to determine the cause. WSAZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The latest Kids Count Data Book shows West Virginia improved its overall child well-being ranking to 41st from last year's 44th. The report ranks the state 39th for economic well-being and health, 32nd in family and community, but 45th for education—prompting calls for further support to help children and families recover post-pandemic. - ➤ Cabell County Schools are offering three meal options—daily lunches at community sites, breakfast and lunch through the Summer Learning Program, and weekly meal boxes with sign-ups starting today at 1 p.m. Travis Austin said the busy program plans to order only the food needed to reduce waste for students over June and July. - ➤ The Huntington fire department received new life-saving gear on June 8th — officials say the equipment will help firefighters respond more quickly during emergencies. WSAZ
- ➤ West Virginia American Water asked the Public Service Commission to allow a 27.9% rate increase that would add $16 per month to bills after over $300 million was spent on system improvements, and the utility plans to phase in the hike with an $11 increase first then $5 later. The commission will decide over the next 300 days while the company also offers an affordability program for low-income customers & those needing help paying their bills. MetroNews
- ➤ The Milton Volunteer Fire Department now has new life-saving gear that includes three new A.E.D.s and a portable LifePak monitor to check vital signs—boosting its ability to perform effective first aid on both adults and children. Lieutenant Jonathan Black said the gear also supports an upgraded fire truck water tank and will help increase the odds of saving lives. WSAZ
- ➤ Lesage Natural, a local West Virginia water company and division of nonprofit Green Acres Regional Center that serves over 2,500 clients, will start supplying purified water—sourced from underground in-state—to state agencies beginning July 1 and will continue to provide local jobs for people with disabilities.
