CRIME NEWS

  • Floyd’s Nursery on Route 60 in Barboursville was burglarized early Monday by two suspects caught on video—owner Ashley Napier filed a police report and is asking the community to help in any way they can.  WOWK-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two old sites that helped people escape slavery were honored with new markers in Southern Ohio. The markers at Campbell House and Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church are part of the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tourism project and a planned tour will include 27 verified sites—covering Southern Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia.  WSAZ
  • Two historic sites that once offered safe haven for people escaping slavery have been added to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom — a move that honors their historic role — and raise hopes for increased preservation efforts.  WSAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Holderby Hall, a building on Marshall University’s campus for over 60 years, had crews clear trees and shrubs on Monday as they prepared for demolition, which continues through Friday. Marshall will replace the structure with a new apartment-style residence to boost student housing on campus — a change that updates a long-held part of the campus.  WSAZ
  • Yesterday evening, Marshall University's Vice President for Economic and Workforce Development, Brandon Dennison, delivered welcoming remarks alongside a specially designed robot at the West Virginia Association for Career and Technical Education event at 5 p.m. at the Brad D. Smith Center for Business and Education—he said the partnership, influenced by MU’s First Lady Alys Smith, aims to help teachers embrace new classroom technologies.  MetroNews
  • At a meeting on Tuesday, the Cabell County Board of Education discussed moving middle and high school start times later to help students get enough sleep, but some teachers and parents warned the change might disrupt work schedules and bus routines.
