  • Marshall University officials hosted a mile-long walk at Ritter Park on May 16 as part of Gov. Patrick Morrisey's Mountaineer Mile initiative; over 200 locals joined leaders from the university, Marshall Health Network, and the city to launch Community Cares Week (a four-day campus beautification event) (volunteer projects are planned to continue).  WCHS-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Better Business Bureau is hosting its 13th annual Shred & E-cycle event today from 9 a.m. to noon at the Marshall University parking lot at the corner of 3rd Ave. and Hal Greer Blvd. The event offers shredding and e-cycling services to raise awareness for identity theft and fraud protection, accepts donations for the BBB Charitable and Educational Fund, and features Knight Horst with Taylor Iron and Metal while not taking certain batteries, box TVs, or mercury monitors (flat screen TVs are accepted with a two-item limit).  WOWK-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Huntington Museum of Art urged local officials and community members to support continued federal funding for the National Endowment for the Arts after emails on May 2 indicated that grants already awarded might be cut. The museum, which relies on these grants for exhibitions, education programs and nature tours, warned that a funding reduction could harm its operations.  WOWK-TV

  • Cabell Midland High School music teacher Ed Harkless is retiring after 46 years, and his final performance is set for graduation on May 22. He and his wife plan to travel (visit grandchildren and chase waterfalls).  WSAZ

  • Preliminary data shows that West Virginia’s overdose deaths dropped 43.5% last year, a sharper decline than the nation's 27% drop; Dr. Matthew Christiansen said several measures helped lower the numbers—ongoing federal support is needed to maintain the progress.  MetroNews

  • Hurricane boys won the state championship with a 4-2 win over Woodrow Wilson after rain moved Friday’s matches indoors—Huntington girls grabbed their 14th title with a close 4-3 win over Morgantown.   • Marshall University has launched a national search for its next athletic director and established an 11-member search committee led by Chief of Staff Ginny Painter to oversee the process with CarrSports Consulting+ aiming to name a new leader within 60 days.  WSAZ
