- ➤ A condemned, century-old community hub was demolished today in Huntington as neighbors watched with mixed feelings — the building had been a long-time local landmark. WSAZ
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ State officials announced on Wednesday, May 13 that a new industrial manufacturing facility is planned in West Virginia. The $25M investment by Sandvik and Alpha Metallurgical Resources will create about 120 jobs + support local mining operations. WCHS-TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Linda Larue retired after 47 years as a librarian at Barboursville Public Library, with a retirement party held Wednesday afternoon & she was honored as a Hometown Hero in 2025. WSAZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State regulators approved Appalachian Power’s base rate adjustment that will raise residential bills by about $4.84 per month for 1,000 kilowatt hours when new rates take effect June 1, and the change will also increase commercial and industrial rates to help improve the electric grid. WCHS-TV
- ➤ Appalachian Power received PSC approval for a $4.84 per 1,000 kilowatts electric bill increase effective June 1 & the utility will not request another base rate increase until after next June as part of its inflation-based strategy to keep costs manageable. MetroNews
- ➤ 101-year-old Yolanda Ferrell cast her ballot Tuesday at the Marie Redd Senior Citizen’s Center during West Virginia's primary election. Born in Fort Gay, she moved to Huntington in the late 1940s and is a Douglas High School graduate (she has voted continuously since 1946). WSAZ
- ➤ On May 13, 1861, delegates met in Wheeling for the first Wheeling convention, a key event that helped West Virginia separate from Virginia & set the stage for adopting a state declaration. WSAZ
