COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The West Virginia AFL-CIO hosted the 38th annual Workers Memorial Ceremony at Barboursville Park on April 28, reading the names of 17 workers who died on the job in 2025.  Charleston Gazette-Mail

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local first responders will be on standby during the Wasteland Jamboree today as they coordinate with event organizers to secure the venue (including designated medical stations) for a safe celebration.  WSAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Crum Pre K-8 School was recognized on Wednesday as an exemplary practice school for academics by the West Virginia State Superintendent of Schools. The state award highlights the school’s strong academics & commitment to quality education.  WSAZ
  • On Apr. 29, Huntington High School was recognized for improved attendance + officials say the acknowledgment reflects local efforts to boost student success.  WSAZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State and federal agencies including the EPA are testing and removing chemicals at the Ames Goldsmith Catalyst Refiners site — located in Institute — following a deadly emergency on April 22 that injured over 30 people; air monitoring on April 29 showed safe levels offsite.  WSAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • High school track teams at Huntington High School united in a prayer circle Tuesday evening to support a student athlete who suffered a medical emergency — local coaches confirmed he recovered well with teams from across West Virginia showing support.  WSAZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sportsmen held a summit in Flatwoods to form a new group that will share their views on game and fish laws with the Natural Resources Commission before Thursday’s vote; the group wants to be proactive with new commissioner appointments (to ensure informed decisions).  MetroNews
