- ➤ A utility truck parked at Teays Valley Fire Department caught fire in its engine compartment early Thursday (3 a.m.) causing heavy damage to the vehicle while 911 and local fire departments responded (no injuries were reported) and contained the blaze. MetroNews

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At the state Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, State Superintendent Michele Blatt said the Department of Education struggled to hire enough staff to support the counties under state control, noting the Office of Accountability (with four employees) might be affected by budget cuts. Chancellor Sarah Armstrong Tucker added that her commission is also short staffed and has been using contracted and retired workers for school oversight. MetroNews

- ➤ The House passed two bills Thursday to fund the Hope Scholarship with nearly $62 million by taking $28 million from the general revenue surplus and $33.8 million from the lottery surplus—measures sent to the Senate—less than three days before the session ended. MetroNews
- ➤ State senators passed a bill with a 19-15 vote that would give the Legislature final authority over school board rules, and the amended bill now goes to the House of Delegates with only days left in the session (voters rejected a similar change in November). The measure, part of House Bill 2755, aims to shift policy control that has long rested with the state Board of Education. MetroNews
