Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 10th of April.
Good morning, Huntington.
The Huntington Red Cross held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday — in Kinetic Park — for its new facility.
Local officials say construction will begin soon and the center will expand local services.
Marshall Board of Governors approved the 2025-2026 fiscal year budget on April 9 — raising tuition and fee costs by 2.5 percent for resident and non-resident undergrad and grad students, along with increases to capital, rec center, and auxiliary fees.
The budget also set a 2.6 percent rise in room rates and limited meal plan hikes to 4 percent — measures that will affect campus living costs.
West Virginia senators passed a bill that bans cell phone use during class, with the Senate vote coming 33 to 1 and the House approving the measure on March 21.
County boards will set policies for the 2025-2026 school year and may confiscate devices for repeat offenders, while students with individualized education programs or medical needs will be exempt.
Marshall University’s Board of Governors approved a 2.5% increase in tuition and fees for resident students along with higher housing and dining rates that will start on July 1—while also approving the 2025-2026 budget to address a projected $12.4 million deficit and support modest enrollment growth.
The Senate passed a bill to raise pay for Birth to Three practitioners by 25%—their first raise since 2003—but the measure stalled in the House Finance Committee as its chair would not move it forward.
The program serves over 7,000 children in 55 counties and may receive extra funds through a separate bill to cover a funding gap until June 30 as the legislative session ends on April 12.
The Huntington Sanitary Board announced a Capital Improvement Project to target flooding on 3rd and 5th avenues.
The project will work to improve drainage and reduce water buildup — further details on timing are pending — as officials plan to lower flood risks in the area.
A groundbreaking ceremony for a new Red Cross facility in Huntington was held on Wednesday by the American Red Cross Central Appalachian Region.
The organization plans to move from its nearly 50-year-old building on Veterans Memorial Boulevard to the new Kinetic Park location this fall, where it will focus on disaster operations and mobile blood drives.
