Good morning, Huntington. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 31st of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UMWA President Cecil Roberts gave the main speech at the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day event at Nitro Living Memorial Park on Sunday. He honored Vietnam veterans by recalling the yearly cleaning of the Vietnam Memorial Wall (a sign of local respect) and stressing gratitude for their sacrifice.  MetroNews

CRIME NEWS

  • Mason County police are looking for two suspects who led a police chase from Gallia County, Ohio into West Virginia—where their vehicle hit a residence’s car and fence and a police cruiser when a deputy tried to stop them.  MetroNews

CULTURE NEWS

  • Calvin Grimm is making progress on his documentary Bring Them Home—focused on West Virginia MIA Vietnam veterans—by locating Sergeant Jimmy Taylor's family in Indiana; Taylor, from Nitro, went missing in 1966 and is now 83. Grimm said he will interview Taylor’s wife in person this week and is working to contact families of other veterans including Lt. John Albright from Huntington and Sergeant James Duncan.  MetroNews

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Senate Education Committee passed Senate Bill 89 that would allow charter schools for at-risk students and the bill will move to the Senate Finance Committee for further review. The proposed schools would serve students from public schools where 70 percent of the enrollment qualifies as high-risk, including homeless and foster youth.  MetroNews

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Division of Natural Resources will start the 80th annual Gold Rush tomorrow by stocking 69 waters with golden trout to boost fishing opportunities for children and families. Jim Hedrick said the agency planned for years ahead and noted that 41 state park lakes (with family amenities) are included to restock local waters.  MetroNews

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • First Energy, a main power supplier for 545,000 customers across 40 counties, said a Senate bill passed last week could raise electric bills by changing how utilities recover costs and plan new generation. The company criticized a House bill that will be considered by state delegates, arguing that mandates for microgrids and data centers (aimed at boosting economic growth) could block new investments and lead to higher costs for families.  MetroNews
  • West Virginia delegates plan a trigger law to end Medicaid expansion coverage if federal reimbursement drops below 90%, a step that would disenroll nearly 165,000 people and leave a $160 million gap (the measure is meant to pressure Congress to maintain current funding levels). Rural health advocates warn that such cuts could put rural hospitals at risk as many depend on Medicaid for a large share of their revenue (threatening care for low-income residents).  MetroNews
  • Senate Bill 658 stalled in the House Judiciary Committee after passing the Senate unanimously earlier this month. The bill would require advisors assisting veterans with disability claims to be accredited—aiming to stop claim sharks from charging high fees—as legislators push for its passage before the session ends on April 12.  MetroNews

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is pushing for major changes to school meals and SNAP benefits by urging removal of synthetic food dyes linked to health risks — Gov. Patrick Morrisey is leading a West Virginia initiative that bans additives like Red 40 from school meals. Kennedy joined Morrisey on Friday as part of a broader HHS effort to encourage states nationwide to update food programs while debates continue over how the changes may affect families.  WOWK-TV
