COMMUNITY NEWS

  • During Community Restaurant Week in Huntington, participating restaurants will donate part of their proceeds to support the Huntington Compass Program that offers wellness and stress relief for firefighters and police officers (and their families). Buddy’s BBQ is on Monday and the event runs through Monday, March 9.  WSAZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Huntington Museum of Art held its Museum Ball that raised funds for new exhibits and community programs. The event brought local art lovers together to support future museum initiatives.  WSAZ
  • Marshall University is celebrating 100 years of Black History Month with events planned after February. Burnis Morris, director of the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Lyceum, explained the centennial celebration on First Look at Four.  WSAZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Mar. 2, 1961, the Legislature and Gov. Wally Barron signed legislation renaming Marshall College to Marshall University — honoring U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Marshall and marking the school’s modern era since its founding in 1837.  WSAZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • USACE’s Huntington District and WVDEP are managing cleanup of a mineral oil spill from a January incident at an Appalachian Power substation that reached the Guyandotte River and R.D. Bailey Lake. Cleanup crews reposition containment booms and absorbents (sheen remains visible) as boat ramps stay closed during recovery.  WSAZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Merritt’s Creek Veterinary Center in Barboursville opened urgent care for pets on Saturday, offering emergency care (Fri 3–11 p.m., Sat and Sun 12–8 p.m.) for off-hour pet needs.  WSAZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marshall lost its Senior Night game to Georgia Southern Friday but earned the No. 2 seed through tiebreakers among six teams. The team will play in the Sun Belt semifinal in Pensacola Sunday at 8:30 p.m., and coach Corny Jackson said they plan to refocus before the contest.  MetroNews
