A family escaped their burning home in Huntington Monday night (Feb.

16) when flames broke out, and firefighters responded promptly.

Today marks the anniversary of Morgan Morgan’s 1735 commission as a militia captain and pioneering settler who set the stage for our regional history (his company later became America’s oldest active military unit).

His roles spanned early commerce, public roads, and the establishment of our first local church.

State Board of Education Chairman Paul Hardesty is working to set up meetings with Gov. Patrick Morrisey, House Speaker Roger Hanshaw and Senate President Randy Smith to address school funding, over-regulation and the county education delivery model—he said the discussions will look for unified solutions that benefit students.

Cabell County School Board began its search for a new superintendent as Tim Hardesty is set to retire in July.

The board accepts candidate submissions until Feb. 29 and will review them on March 3.

A House committee is reviewing a school funding bill that would grant block sums of ($8,000) per student plus supplemental funds for special needs while another panel advanced a (3% pay raise) for educators and state staff.

Both measures are moving through review to adjust educational funding and employee pay.

Marshall University's iCenter received a $1.2 million grant from Charleston-based Quality Insights to launch a three-year program supporting local innovators through GBeta (a seven-week, no-cost incubator).

State lawmakers are discussing a school aid formula bill (aiming to adjust funding for local schools) with further talks planned in the state capital.

Marshall beat South Alabama 84+80 Monday night as Wyatt Fricks scored 27 points, added seven rebounds, and blocked five shots while Jalen Speer contributed 18 points + eight rebounds and seven assists to keep the Herd in the Sun Belt race.
