CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Feb. 3, 1865, West Virginia outlawed slavery when the House and Senate both approved the measure — a milestone that shaped our state’s legacy. WSAZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Marshall University received a $1.2M gift from Quality Insights to expand its gBETA accelerator at the iCenter in Huntington. The funding will support two gBETA cohorts per year + a new gALPHA cohort focused on early-stage startup testing over the next three years. WSAZ
- ➤ Marshall Day at the Capitol brought community members together yesterday as Marshall and West Virginia University hosted interactive exhibits on fields such as aviation, manufacturing, cyber, and health care and ended with a Universities United reception (celebrating joint efforts) at the legislature building. WSAZ
- ➤ The Senate Education Committee advanced a bill Tuesday morning to let schools use 10 NTI days (nontraditional instruction days) instead of five to manage weather closures; the measure now moves to the Committee on Finance for further review. WSAZ
- ➤ School officials sent students home early on Feb. 3 after a gas leak was discovered near the school (official investigations are underway) and more updates will follow as safety crews complete their checks. WSAZ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local meteorologist Tony Cavalier discussed expected snowfall and slick roads this morning as crews prepped for winter conditions. Residents are advised to drive carefully (travel updates are available on local radio). WSAZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Locking operations resumed at Willow Island Locks and Dam on Feb. 3 after a brief warm-up flushed ice that halted work for five days; eight vessels passed and six remain waiting. The Army Corps works with local towing companies+ to monitor conditions and resolve remaining issues. MetroNews
- ➤ Huntington Public Works Department reports a critical road salt shortage with only 50 tons remaining as crews prepare for winter weather. WSAZ
- ➤ The WV Department of Human Services has extended the food loss reporting period until Feb. 14 for SNAP recipients who lost power for over 4 hours during the winter storm (a signed affidavit is required). Residents receiving SNAP benefits should contact their local DoHS office to request replacement benefits. WSAZ
- ➤ Residents in Wayne have gone over two weeks without usable water after a main break (the crisis continues) as city crews work to repair the issue and restore service. WSAZ
- ➤ The House of Delegates passed House Bill 4740 today in a 92-1 vote to set up $199 million in federal rural health funds for next year. The bill now moves to the Senate as state officials work to strengthen rural health care. MetroNews

- ➤ Marshall will host Southern Miss at the Henderson Center today at 7 p.m. as the Herd plans to slow high-scoring forward Tylik Weeks, who has recently put up 28 points in a game. The team has a strong home record in previous matchups and looks to continue building its momentum. MetroNews
