- ➤ On Jan. 6, Gov. Patrick Morrisey announced he will ask the Legislature to expand the state Department of Education's Star Academy for at-risk middle school students, currently in four schools (Logan, Martinsburg, Philippi and Charleston's West Side), to as many as 16 more over several years. - ➤ State beekeepers have drafted a bill for the 2026 session that will create uniform beekeeping laws, set aside funds for flora growth, and alert to an imminent mite threat. The bill aims to boost honey bee protections statewide — a move to help a vital industry. The Wayne County News

- ➤ Marshall women's team is scheduled to face Old Dominion in a season contest, with game details such as time and venue to be confirmed (updates expected soon). WSAZ
- ➤ Marshall’s men’s basketball team won a close game on Wednesday night by beating James Madison 66-64. The Herd improved to 11-5 overall as players scored in double figures while limiting JMU to 6-of-23 three-point shots, and they will meet Georgia State Saturday. WSAZ
- ➤ The Marshall women’s basketball team improved to 14-3 overall with a 77 to 70 win over Old Dominion on Jan. 7 and marked their ninth straight victory; Timaya Lewis-Eutsey scored a career-high 33 points while Peyton Ilderton added 12 in a strong fourth quarter. WSAZ
- ➤ On Wednesday, WVU fell 71 to 66 to 17th ranked Texas Tech in Morgantown; the Mountaineers missed 16 of 19 shots and six of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter — a lapse that cost them a six point lead. MetroNews
